Originated in Finland around 19th century legend of Herkko Rosvo-Ronkainen, or “Ronkainen the Robber.

Villages plundered, wives stolen by Ronkainen and his thieves.

Modern event began in Finland in 1992, international competitors allowed in 1995, to the US in 1999.

Winning team brings home wife’s weight in beer.

The North American rules and regulations for wife carrying vary slightly from the World Championship rules on several points. The list below is the official set of rules and regulations for the North American Championship and are followed by most state and regional qualifying events.

Bog Snorkelling


Began as a result of an over the bar conversation in The Neuadd Arms between Gordon Green and a few regulars.

competitors completing, in the shortest time possible, two consecutive lengths of a water-filled trench cut through a peat bog. Competitors must wear snorkels and flippers and complete the course without using conventional swimming strokes, relying on flipper power alone. A wetsuit is not compulsory, but is often worn.
